The IT lab of the Physics Department

This page details some tasks I accomplished as administrator of the IT laboratory of the Physics Department of the National University.

The Linux kernel

I got a great experience as a Linux Kernel manager, by compiling diferent versions of it for different X86 and x86_64 platforms. The task requires much less test cycles when you get used to the terminology and the descriptions of the different kernel options.

I have given two lectures about configuration, compilation and installation of the Linux Kernel v2.6 this year.

For more info about the kernel itself, you can refer to www.kernel.org

Slackware Linux

Slackware Linux, by Patrick Volkerding, has become one of the most traditional Linux distributions of the world. Its focus on security, stability and simplicty is renowned. The version 11.0 of this distribution is loaded with gcc-3.4.6, kde-3.5.4 and many other useful tools for scientific work.

I gave lectures about installation, configuration and administratioon of Slackware Linux, versions 10.1, 10.2 and 11.0 in the last two years.

Gentoo Linux

Gentoo Linux is a wonderful meta-distribution. It works by installing a basic operating system on your computer and then telling the Emerge system which packages do you want to have installed. Emerge downloads, compiles and installs the packages and all their dependances for you. This is much like Linux From Scratch in that you can tell Emerge how much optimisations do you want in your system, and what programs do you want; the great difference is Gentoo builds all your system in two or three days, not an entire month.
